Mutti San Marzano Peeled tomatoes are deliciously juicy and have a robust red colour and a dense texture. Only healthy fruits, harvested at the right stage of ripeness are selected from Mutti, following the best standards of hygiene and quality, according to the San Marzano P.D.O. policy document and very strict legislations.

San Marzano tomatoes have been awarded the EU’s Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for their unique nature. They need little introduction among the connoisseurs.

This variety originates from the small town of San Marzano sul Sarno near Naples, in volcanic soil of Agro Sarnese Nocerino, in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.

Thinner and pointed, with a much thicker and a bright red flesh, fewer seeds, and a stronger, sweeter and less acidic taste; these are the characteristic of San Marzano tomatoes, enhanced by the skilful transformation into peeled which preserves the fragrance of this ancient tomato.

The tomatoes are covered with a velvety sauce to preserve their freshness.

San Marzano tomatoes, along with Pomodorino del Piennolo del Vesuvio, have been designated as the only ones that can be used for the authentic Neapolitan Pizza.

One story tells that the first seed of this tomato came to Campania region in 1770, as a gift from the Viceroyalty of Peru to the Kingdom of Naples, and that it was planted in the area of San Marzano sul Sarno.

About the producer:

Mutti’s long love story starts in 1899 in Parma, a town which lies in an area called the ‘Food Valley’, located in the Emilia Romagna region - north of Italy. Many worldwide known products come exactly from this small but wonderful Region (Parma ham, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, balsamic vinegar of Modena, just to mention a few).

Giovanni Mutti, the founder, was a farmer ahead of his time in his use of the sidereal system, which is also used these days in organic farming. After many experiments, Giovanni managed to innovate it by introducing the crop rotation technique. This allowed the soil to recover its nutrients while cutting down the need for natural and chemical fertilisers.

120 years later, Mutti still grows their tomatoes in the very same land, with the main variety being the ‘Rotondo di Parma’, keeping the same identical values: quality, transparency and reliability and even though they are working with over 400 farmers, they know each others names – as they are part of a family.

They constantly work together and try to further develop their farms with the use of innovative systems, in order to improve their irrigation techniques to save both water and energy, protect the environment while still obtaining the best product they possibly can.
